Want More Freedom? Leverage Your Time

All business owners must struggle with time management. In a personal trainer’s business, you are also dealing with the schedules of your clients. While each of us usually has a plan of attack for our daily lives, few of us actually know how to leverage our time.
Lists are often the way people work. Some are obliged to do it. 7 a.m. client, 8 a.m. meeting, 9 a.m. client, 9:30 client, 10:15 client, and on the list goes. At home, there are usually chores associated with dinner, getting kids ready for bed, etc.
Yep, that’s what we call a tight schedule. Yet it does not prove to be an efficient way to manage your time.
The power of leverage is all about balance. It’s important to have a healthy balance of your time.
You cannot make improvements in your own balance if you have no idea where your life is on the scale. Discern which stage you are currently in.
Journal your time for several days, preferably a whole week. After the time period, determine the amount of time spent with your family.
-
Did you spend time doing a hobby or something else you really enjoyed?
-
What did you read?
-
How much exercise did you get?
-
Did you read anything during the trial period?
-
If yes, were you in it for work or just for the fun of it?
-
Did you spend time in any personal goals or endeavors, and if so, how much?
If you’re stuck on a typical “to do” list schedule, chances are you’ll see that your time is imbalanced in some of these areas. Calculate how you spent your time. How much time did you spend for career, family, personal growth, reading and other interests? Make yourself a little chart showing the percentage of each area of life and how much time you spent on it. How much time did you allot for career compared to family and other important aspects? The results could surprise you!
The great part about this exercise is that once you see how little time you spend on personal development, you can devise a plan to change it. Allocate how much time per day you want to set aside for family, how many hours per week you need to devote to your personal goals, time for your hobbies, camping, exercise, wakeboarding, etc.
When you understand the idea of time leverage, your life won’t be held hostage by a “to do” list ever again! The “to do” list is an important way to track chores, but life should be more than a chore.
